After several scouting trips in the Figueroa Mountain area, the La Jolla trail stands out as our best option for a wildflower walk. We visited this location two years ago, and its colorful displays, plant diversity, ease-of-use, and parking make it a “return-to.” This walk starts at Figueroa Mountain Road and descends about 800 feet over 1.8 miles to upper Alamo Pintado Creek. The views of Grass Mountain draw us along the path through grasslands, chaparral, shady woodland, and finally, to the cool creek corridor. Low winter temperatures slowed the early-blooming flowers, and they are only just peaking. Poppies and sky lupines in the area are luxuriant. This trail is rich with relief: delicate understory plants, robust shrubs, and impressive manzanitas, oaks, and pines. This trail has plenty of shade. The walk is easy-to-moderate.
