“Water and the California Dream” lecture to examine water and the future of California
The Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society and UC Sedgwick Reserve are hosting a free lecture with David Carle, titled “Water and the California Dream” on Friday, April 25th, 7:00 p.m. at the Reserve’s Tipton Meeting House.
An author, naturalist, and retired State Park Ranger, Carle became intrigued with the subject of water in California long before our current drought. This talk will explore the water choices that have shaped California’s history and development. He will examine how our compromised natural environment and reduced quality of life can be improved if Californians step away from the historic pattern and embrace limited water supplies as a fact of life. Following the lecture, His books will be available for purchase and signing.
Carle has authored 13 books, including Introduction to Water in California, which was described by Guy Baggett, Chair of the California State Water Resources Control Board, as “a must read for anyone living in California, whether they are students, politicians, farmers, environmental activists, or corporate executives.” Carle’s most recent book from University of California Press isTraveling the 38th Parallel: A Water Line Around the World, which he co-authored with his wife Janet Carle. He also the wrote Water and the California Dream, Fire in California, and Soil in California.
Carle grew up in Orange County, California and received his bachelors degree at UC Davis in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and a masters degree from CSU Sacramento in Recreation and Parks Administration. He was a ranger with California State Parks for 27 years, including 18 years at the Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve, where he participated in the long effort to protect that Eastern Sierra inland sea from the effects of stream diversions to Los Angeles. He taught biology and natural history courses at Cerro Coso Community College in Mammoth Lakes.
Seating capacity is limited to the first 100 attendees, and early arrival is suggested; the Reserve gates will open by 6:00 p.m. Bring a flashlight for the short walk back to the parking area after the program.
